“So ALL kids can play!”
The Ted Hargreaves Fund, established in 2006, is dedicated to promoting the advancement of leadership and learning through sports. Wishing to help young athletes from financially disadvantaged families play sport, the THF met with Sport BC for suggestions. It was recommended that they start a KidSport™ chapter. Unsure if they were ready to take on such a large task alone the THF approached the NRSC to join with them in establishing the KidSport™ Nelson chapter. The proposal was approved and a KidSport™ Nelson committee was created. The committee meets on a monthly basis.
KidSport™ Nelson began processing applications in the fall of 2007 and continues to do so. They also plan to work closely with other organizations such as Success by Six and GOGA.
Funding
Funding has been received from the Nelson Regional Sports Council, KidSport™ BC, the Ted Hargreaves Fund, Hockey Day in Canada, and the Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from the sale of the book “A Timeline of Nelson’s Hockey History” by Bill McDonnell, upon it’s completion, will also go to KidSport™ Nelson. In addition, presentations have been made to the Nelson City police and Nelson Rotary and the committee is investigating possible grants.
KidSport™ Donations
Donations can be made through the Nelson Regional Sports Council’s office, however if a tax receipt is required they must be made through KidSport™ Canada. Please note that all funds raised locally stay in Nelson and for every $1 raised an additional $.50 is received from KidSport™ BC through SportsFunder.

KidSport™ Facts
Money raised through the KidSport™ Fund benefits children through BC by helping to remove the financial obstacles that prevent some children from participating in sport. The KidSport™ Fund is administered with the assistance of Sport BC.
Originally conceived in BC, KidSport™ chapters have flourished in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Newfoundland and Northwest Territories.
Since 1993 the KidSport™ Fund has distributed more than $2 million to kids across BC.
More than 14,000 BC children, between the ages 6 and 18, have had a chance to participate in sport because of support from the KidSport™ Fund.
Corporate partners currently include TELUS, BC Ferries, Sports Funder and the NHL Players Association Goals & Dreams Fund.
There are currently 16 community based KidSport™ Funds in BC, raising money locally and supporting young athletes in their own communities.
A child’s participation in sport encourages self-esteem, teamwork, dedication and personal excellence.
